Post-Partum Skincare - Tips To Maintain The Glow
Pregnancy is a beautiful journey and every woman goes through it differently. Post-pregnancy, every mother has to be very careful and vigilant 24/7 to take care of the baby. Sleep deprivation, tiredness, weakness, lost face sheen, dull & dry skin are some of the most common concerns every new mom normally faces.
For new mothers, there is very little to no time left to take care of their own body, let alone maintain a skincare routine. Thus when self-care takes a back seat and new responsibilities sink in, many mothers are diagnosed with postpartum depression.
Postpartum, the hormonal levels fluctuate and make you fatigued, lethargic, tired, and emotional. These all start taking a toll on the overall health of new moms, including the skin. Many mothers experience uneven skin tone, dark circles, puffy eye bags, acne, pigmentation, stretch marks, and dull skin. All of these are coupled with sluggish metabolism and baby blues make things even worse.
Here are a few tips on how to retain and maintain the post-pregnancy glow.
Maintain Self-Hygiene
It is very important to maintain your hygiene all the time. However, it is understandable that after the delivery, being there for the baby 24/7 can take a toll on your personal hygiene. Dirty diapers, gooey foods, maternity clothes, baby oils, and creams become an inseparable part of motherhood. Have a shower daily, this will help you keep your body and mind fresh and relaxed.
Eat right
Stop gorging on all that sugary stuff (let go of the pregnancy cravings) and start making changes to your diet. Eat clean and don't increase the intake of junk food. Add dark green and leafy vegetables like broccoli, spinach, cabbage, beetroot, and carrots to your diet. These veggies are rich in essential vitamins and antioxidants, which will help in maintaining your skin's health. You can enjoy cheat days, but make sure that you are not taking extra calories more than you need for a healthy body and mind.
A healthy (and delicious) way to have your after-pregnancy glow is by drinking detox water. Carom seeds (Ajwain) water is usually considered as it helps in cleaning out toxins from the uterus and it also aids in digestion.
Keep yourself hydrated
It is a known fact that drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day is very important. While you might find yourself extremely busy and tired the whole day, try to keep yourself hydrated. This will help you in supporting the liver and also help in maintaining and stabilizing your hormones.
Skincare routine
Dead skin, acne, and pigmentation are common skin issues post-pregnancy. Even in your busy and tiring schedule, try to spend some time on your basic skincare routine: CTM - Cleaning, Toning, and Moisturizing. Use mild cleansers, and also apply sunblocks even if you are indoors. Try to use herbal, organic, natural, and ayurvedic products as they are free from harsh chemicals and do not have any side effects.
Some skincare ingredients to avoid during and just after pregnancy:
- Retinoid
- Parabens
- Hydroquinone
- Ammonia
- Toluene
- Fragrance
- Phthalates
- Formaldehyde
Exercise
Exercising during pregnancy is great for women's health, but being physically active soon after you give birth is just as important. Breaking a sweat boosts your energy levels, helps you to sleep better, relieves stress, and even potentially staves off postpartum depression (PPD). Do read about the things to keep in mind before you start your postpartum fitness.
You can also get your glow back by doing yoga, especially through breathing exercises like Pranayam, Anulom Vilom, and others. These will help increase blood circulation also.
Sleep cycle
Try to get plenty of sleep. Make sure you are also hitting the bed, whenever your little one is sleeping. As you sleep, your body rejuvenates itself and proper sleep will give you healthier and glowing skin. A good night's sleep is important to get rid of dark circles, eye bags, and dull-looking skin.
Don't forget your supplements
Your body needs doses of calcium and vitamin supplements to recover. They will also help your skin get back its sheen. Do not skip them.
It is a roller coaster of emotions from the start of your pregnancy. You tend to feel everything too in high doses. You might feel overwhelmed all the time, but don't forget to take care of yourself too. Follow these tips to get back and maintain your post-pregnancy glow. And mothers...remember: You're doing good.
