Witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is a shrub that’s native to the United States. It has been widely used for centuries by Native Americans as a remedy for a variety of skin ailments related to irritation and inflammation. The leaves and bark of witch hazel are made into teas and ointments because of their powerful medicinal properties.
Most often, it is applied to the skin and scalp because of its ability to ease inflammation and soothe sensitive skin. It can also be added to herbal teas and ingested orally (but in small amounts) as a natural treatment for other conditions.
Witch hazel is often called liquid astringent. It has several chemical compounds like procyanidins, resin, flavonoids, volatile oil, calcium oxalate, resin, wax, saponins, and gallic acid.
It is sold in the form of a liquid astringent that is intended solely for external use on the body. Since it contains tannins, it’s not recommended for internal use.
Witch hazel can be used in treating a variety of skin care conditions, including acne, hemorrhoids, skin irritation, redness, and inflammation. It can also be used to treat minor cuts and bruises and to soothe minor skin irritations, such as scrapes, insect bites, poison ivy, eczema, and psoriasis.
